  • Riverbound Sports Paddle Co First of Its Kind to Become Autism Certified

    DEC 12, 2019

Press Release ( - MESA, Ariz. - Dec 12, 2019 - Riverbound Sports Paddle Co has become a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC). This designation is granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which means the staff has completed a training and certification process so that individuals and families with children with autism can enjoy the best possible experience.

Riverbound Sports joins a growing number of organizations in Mesa, AZ, to become certified as part of a movement initiated by Visit Mesa, culminating in the designation of Mesa as the first-ever Autism Certified City.

“We are so excited to be part of this amazing community and the collective efforts by the City of Mesa. It gives us so much joy to provide awesome, on-water experiences to people visiting the valley, so it only makes perfect sense to expand our demographic to those who would instead shy away. This certification reinforces our ability to share more opportunities with individuals and families eager to try,” said Corey Carlin, owner of Riverbound Sports. “And we really love our local lakes and rivers! We have options for adventure seekers to pick up rental gear and create their own experience or we have set events at various locations throughout the year where everyone is welcome. Regardless, we always have a great time.”

For almost 20 years, IBCCES has been the industry leader in autism certification for healthcare, education and corporate professionals around the globe. IBCCES recognized that many families with children who have special needs have limited travel options. In response to this need, IBCCES created training and certification programs specifically for the hospitality and travel industry. More parents and individuals are seeking out destinations and organizations that have completed a certification program through an accredited source. IBCCES is the only credentialing organization providing this type of certification, which includes evidence-based best practices, as well as the perspectives of individuals with autism, alongside other tools and resources such as onsite reviews and customized recommendations to ensure the program is a long-term commitment and has a lasting impact.

“Every individual deserves to be able to access and experience nature in a safe and inviting way. We’re thrilled to work with Riverbound Sports so that all families and individuals with autism or sensory needs can have peace of mind when working with their team,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman.

IBCCES also created, a free, online resource for parents that lists certified destinations and connects families to other resources and each other. Each destination listed on the site has met Certified Autism Center (CAC) requirements.

North Coast Paddleboarding is the only SUP guide service with permits to operate in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior and we're now offering a world class guided tour along the cliff lines at Pictured Rocks. Our goal is to not only offer lessons and tours to beginners and intermediate paddlers, but also to spread the word to the SUP industry and avid paddleboarders about this largely undiscovered SUP venue. Lake Superior is a dangerous body of water especially when accompanied by 100+ foot cliff lines that offer no access in or out of the water for miles so it is important to explore Pictured Rocks with a guide. We transport SUP's to remote beaches and then follow our groups with a support / safety vessel and take photographs along the way while carrying any provisions necessary for our guests. This project has been in the works for 2 years and we're now ready to share this exciting opportunity to SUP at Pictured Rocks with the world.

Watch this video to see more about this great adventure!

Downunder Kayaks SUPs & Surf Shop is a water sports business in CT with two on-water locations on safe rivers leading out to Long Island Sound, local islands, estuaries and wild life sanctuaries. It also has a satellite operation at a local beach on Long Island Sound. It's the only full service business of it's kind in the region, offering paddle board and kayak retail, rental, classes, tours, camp, corporate and parties.  We also carry all the merchandise you'd expect in an upscale surf shop. Programs are offered at our location or offsite. Clients are as young as 3 years (in a double kayak with an adult), through seniors (80+), complete novices through serious racers. In New Zealand (or Aussie) the attitude is ‘no worries, she’ll be right mate, give it a go’. Downunder is all about empowering people, helping them be successful, and having a great time. We have found that most people love the water and want to get out on it. It’s a feel good activity and motivating. It changes your attitude. It’s a healthy and fun workout. And it doesn’t break the bank (unlike a trip to New Zealand!)

I am selling Downunder this year, to pursue another career in CA.  It's a super successful business that is easily replicable - think satellite operations at marina's, yacht and beach clubs.  Fun business to run and own, I'm currently here in the summer, but take plenty of time off, and in CA in the winter.  The trick is having a great manager - mine is truly dedicated and comes with the business.

The heritage of paddle sports and Quiksilver Waterman are important chapters in boardriding history, a heritage exemplified by the Carolina Cup.”

The Collection is a premium line of sportswear and performance apparel for men seeking quality clothing with a classic, outdoor aesthetic. Roxy, a member of the Quiksilver family, is the women’s surf, snowboard, fitness and lifestyle brand.

A strong advocate for clean water and a healthy coast, North Carolina Coastal Federation is the designated charity for the Carolina Cup.

Private equity firm Monomoy Capital Partners acquired West Marine, the previous title sponsor for the Carolina Cup.

March 18, 2018, Hirtshals, Denmark – Entering the icy waters at 1 AM with his Naish Maliko 14’0”, Casper Steinfath set off for redemption with the Viking Crossing 2.0.

After his first attempt in February 2017, completing the Viking Crossing is considered the greatest accomplishment for the four time ISA World Champion. He became the first in the world to paddle 147 kilometers (91.3 miles) across the Skagerrak Strait between Denmark and Norway. Three days after his body is still broken down..

Casper walks like an old man his arms are dead and his legs hurt. In fact his whole body hurts.

But the 24-year-old Danish Viking Casper Steinfath is happy, proud and powered up with long-lasting dopamine after he wrote history Sunday evening when he finally put his feet on Norwegian soil after 18 hours and 30 minutes of paddling from Hirtshals in Denmark to Kristiansand in Norway on his Naish Maliko.

“Crossing the wild Skagerrak as the first person ever on a SUP is something I am very proud of. It definitely took everything out of me to fulfill this dream of mine. But it feels really nice to be back home in Cold Hawaii again reflecting over the journey with family and friends,” said Casper, safely back in Cold Hawaii three days after the trip.

    Live on TV2 NEWS
Casper spent the days after Viking Crossing 2.0 to talk to more than 20 Danish and Norwegian tv-stations, radio programs and newspapers. He was all over the news in Denmark and Norway and Danish TV2 News sent live from the trip.

“Right now my body is fully broken down. I feel like just laying in bed for the rest of the week and revisiting my dreams and how magical and intense this crossing over Skagerrak was. I’m pretty sure I will remember both the pain and joy from this Viking Crossing for the rest of my life,” says Casper.

“I could not have accomplished this dream of mine without the help of a bunch of friends, family, and sponsors. I am beyond grateful for the belief and support all the way around. This achievement belongs not to me. It belongs to everyone that had a stake in dreaming this dream,” he adds.

Casper: We can push ourselves further than we think.
Casper became the first paddler in the world to cross the ice cold ocean called Skagerrak. The 24-year-old Dane underlined that he is a paddler with many talents. In September last year, he won his fourth ISA World Champion title in the 200-meter sprint. This Sunday he added another 146 kilometers and 800 meters to the distance.

“I now firmly believe it is not the actual destination that counts. It is the process in which we as humans work to reach our dreams and goals. This is the interesting part. We, humans, are able to push ourselves so much further both physically and mentally than we dare think. Crossing Skagerrak showed me this,” says Casper.

The first chapter of the Danish fairytale was written in the freezing cold darkness at a beach north of Hirtshals. At 1:20am he gently slid his Maliko into the cold water and took his first of 60,000 strokes followed by two boats with lifeguards, two navigators and media crew. The temperature shows minus-seven degrees celsius, the wind was 15-20 knots and small waves constantly tried to push him off the board.

    “My Camelbag is frozen”

But after five hours alone in the dark, the sun suddenly said hello on the horizon. It was the most beautiful morning in many weeks in Denmark with a crystal blue sky, calm ocean, no wind and a warm sun that heated Casper’s cold body.

But it was still cold and suddenly he called his crew from the VHF-radio.

“The water in my Camelbag is frozen. I need warmer water.”

Halfway through he could see the Norwegian coastal mountains and that boosted him and kept him going. But they only slowly came closer to the Danish Viking, and the last four hours were the worst hours on a surfboard in his entire life, he said.

Little brother Peter talked him home
He was in pain during the last 25 kilometers. His back hurt, he wasn’t able to bend his knees and his arms and shoulders were empty of power. The body was just closing down. He was close to quitting several times during the last 25 kilometers. But he kept on moving one stroke after another.

With seven kilometers to go in the Kristiansand Bay, his little brother Peter Steinfath went into the RIB boat and talked his brother home to Pier 6 in Kristiansand Harbour to the waiting family and friends and the mandatory champagne shower.

So where does Casper go from here, after accomplishing one of his biggest and most ambitious goals of his life.

“Right now I just look forward to letting my body recover and my mind digest this wild Odyssey. Afterward, I am excited to train for my upcoming race season and to chase my 5th ISA World Championship and compete on the APP World Tour. But who knows, I don’t think I can resist challenging myself against Mother Nature on new wild projects in the future,” Casper says with a smile on his face.

MAUI, Hawaii - It’s no hidden secret that top-of-the-line race boards often come with a hefty price tag, and for aspiring SUP racers and non-sponsored athletes, this can often mean settling for lower performing boards or a big dent in the savings account. Thanks to Naish, paddlers can once again ride elite race boards while saving some pennies with their Domestic Racer Program.

The program offers top racing equipment, like the Naish Maliko and Carbon Elite Paddle, to the public at special team pricing. Naish launched this promotion in 2016 to help eager paddlers get out and participate in their local SUP races and take their racing to the next level with top quality gear. Now, with Naish riders Casper Steinfath, Kai Lenny, Bernd Roediger and others snatching major race titles left and right on these boards, there’s no better time to get in on this promotion and join the Naish Race Team.

Anyone is able to participate so if you dig the idea of competing on a Naish Maliko at your next SUP race, fill out the signup form on their website by February 1, 2018. From there, you will be contacted by a Naish representative that will help you get started.

Jay Wild and Ron Ayers love to standup paddle.

They also love coffee. Oh, and they're really into Wi-Fi and late-night, caffeine-fueled social debates. So, seven years ago, they opened up Waterman's Landing—an SUP coffee shop on the northwest, California shore of Lake Tahoe. Waterman's has since become a hub of all things paddling—and they brew a mean latte. But mixing SUP and java can get complicated. Here are three things the team at Waterman’s Landing was pretty sure you hadn't considered about the business:

    1. You need to be able to make a double macchiato while talking about organic, fair-trade, single-origin, locally roasted beans one minute, then hop over the counter onto the showroom floor and explain Quickblade’s Shaft Stiffness Index, then back over the counter to make sure the scones aren’t burning, or to cook a hot waffle-and-ice-cream sandwich, all while answering the question, 'So, what’s your opinion on drafting?'

    2. The shop has become a brick and mortar social network for the sport here in Tahoe. So you have to know how to convert the whole place into a disco when visiting racers and paddlers turn a mellow barbecue into a full-blown dance party. And yes, it's happened more than once.

    3. Here's the ultimate challenge: finding and training a summertime staff that has a passion for standup paddling, understands the products and has food service experience, but doesn't want to run off to every SUP race in the area.

Hala Gear Debuts High-Performance Inflatable Designs for Standup Surfers

Inland and coastal paddlers stoked by new level of speed and agility.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLO. (August 9, 2017) – Steamboat Springs, Colo.-based Hala Gear, the leader in inflatable standup paddleboard innovation and design, debuts a new line of high-performance inflatable SUPs designed for shredding river and ocean waves. Hala Gear introduces four boards for 2017—the Hala Gram, Hala Milligram, Hala Peño, and Hala Carbon Playa—that have elevated the responsiveness and performance of surf-specific inflatables to the level of hardboards.
“Each of our surf shapes was methodically designed for elite performance on both river and ocean waves,” says company founder Peter Hall. “Carbon construction, low-volume rails, distinctive shapes, tip-to-tail rocker, and an array of fin set ups make our surfing SUPs perform like no other inflatable on the market.”
Over the past three years standup paddling has been the top outdoor growth activity in the industry, with participation increasing an average of 18 percent, according to the Outdoor Industry Association. Hala is addressing this burgeoning participation by meeting the needs of both skilled and new paddlers to the market, with a slew of designs for touring, river paddling, and now, surfing waves of all shapes and sizes.
The 10’11” Carbon Construction Hala Playa features this, 4.75" rails for a rigid long board feel while holding a line and carving turns; the unique, nut-shaped Hala Gram and Hala Milligram offer the stability and glide of longer boards with the action of shorter boards; and the popular Hala Peño is designed with tip-to-tail rocker and industry-exclusive 3” rails for stomping river surf.
All four boards also debut construction innovations that increase rigidity, durability and perfromance. The Hala Gram and Milligram employ Hala’s bombproof Core Construction™; the Hala Peño debuts Hala’s patent-pending, high-performance DoubleStack™ Construction; and the Carbon Playa heralds Hala’s new Carbon Construction™, integrating carbon stringers that increase rigidity 300 percent over conventional, non composite-reinforced six-inch-thick inflatables.
“We’ve been focused on creating shapes and construction processes for people who love to surf waves, fresh or salty,” Hall says. “We’ve accomplished that with this new line. For me it’s one of my favorite parts of the sport.”
About Hala Gear: Launched in 2011 by Steamboat athlete Peter Hall, Hala Gear, with a meticulous design and testing process, produces a complete array of stand-up paddleboards whose collection delivers maneuverability, stability, performance and durability to whitewater, surfing, touring, racing and expedition categories. Hala boards are performance shaped, super durable, and excel in all waterways.

    MSRP: $1,099

    • Full Rocker
    • 4.75” Low Volume Rails
    • Swallowtail
    • 4 Removable Gummy Side Bite Click Fins

The Gram is super fun to run wave trains and versatile enough to drop into surf spots. This board will be a key piece of equipment when teaching first time surfers and kids.” Hala Team Rider Melanie Seiler

    River Park and Play
    6’11 x 30” x 4.75”

    MSRP: $999

A smaller version of the Gram, the Milligram has a similar look with more spunk. It handles a variety of whitewater and fits into ridiculously small pockets, yet also crosses over into surfing short, snappy ocean waves. And the new nut shape makes this board insanely responsive. The Milligram is a feisty little 7-footer that surfs like a 5-footer, packed full of grit for unbeatable surfing.

    • Core Construction™
    • Responsive nut shape
    • Full rocker
    • 4.75” low-volume rails
    • Swallowtail
    • 5 removable gummy side bite click fins
    • One 8” center flex fin

This board has re-energized my surf season! The 4.75" thickness, or thinness, provides a higher rail performance and the rocker keeps the nose from pearling in short, rowdy waves. Up next: Numbster fins to begin 360 training!” Hala Team Rider Melanie Seiler

River Surfer / Park & Play Surfboard
    6’11” x 32” x DoubleStack™ 3”+ 3”

    MSRP: $1,299
The 2017 Peno has been completely recreated to be the best park and play inflatable on the market. Whether it’s a long, fast wave or a steep, thrashy hole, the Peño will dominate like no other freestyle surfer. With design inspiration from new school river SUPs and playboat kayaks, the Hala Peño has full tip-to-tail rocker that keeps the nose from pearling while surfing, and is the only high volume inflatable river surfer that also supplies 3” low volume rails with our patent-pending DoubleStack™ construction. The Peño is the thinnest railed inflatable that carves and freestyles like a hardboard.

    • Core Construction™
    • Patent-pending DoubleStack™ construction
    • Full rocker
    • Responsive shape
    • Squaretail

The Hala Peño is the best inflatable river surfer on the market. It’s the first inflatable board that I feel like I can really engage the rails for turns. The volume in the tail means you won’t flush, and its rocker lets you fit in anything from steep, green waves to smaller holes. And the fin box options mean you can experiment to find the perfect fin setup for your favorite wave. A lot of thought went into its design." Hala Team Rider Jason Kopp

    Ocean Surf / Touring

    10’11” x 30” x 4.75”
    MSRP: $1,499

The Hala Carbon Playa is a SUP ocean surfers dream. A high-performance surfboard with Carbon Construction™ that rolls up and travels with you. The Playa is packed full of surprises. It allows you to catch a wave while it’s still just an idea and ride it all the way into the beach. You can to paddle out to that island on the horizon and shred its secluded break, or simply pack a lunch and set out for the day with no plans, knowing the adventure is coming your way. The dynamic Hala Playa is a fun and versatile ocean surfer to shred and tour on.

    • Carbon Construction™
    • Full rocker
    • Dynamic shape
    • 4 soft rigging points
    • 4.75” low-volume rails
    • 2 removable, gummy, side-bite click fins
    • 8” center flex fin

I tested it on the ocean waves of Dana Point, California, and loved it. It has a completely new feel. It's super responsive and rigid. On swift water it’s fast, nimble and edgy, letting you carve in and out of eddies. And in surf it is a true longboard, allowing for long rides down the line and making it easy to get past the surf zone.” Hala Team Rider Paul Clark

SUP THE MAG PRODUCT REVIEW:  I'm a big fan of ratchet straps. Until recently, they were the most practical, convenient and turnkey tools for safely securing a stack of boards to the roof of my Subaru. Then I found the Lockrack, and my ratchet straps have been stored under the seat ever since.

Lockrack is the most basic and effective design we've seen to date for securing, hauling and most practically, locking boards to the roof rack of a SUP ride. The setup takes around 20-minutes to install and once they're on, securely loading a board on the roof is as easy and fast as placing it on the rack and sliding the outboard brace until its snug. With Lockracks, gone are the days of worrying about your boards flying off the roof or getting stolen in the parking lot of your local watering hole.

Lockracks come in multiple sizes to suit a variety of crafts from surfboard to SUP to kayak. I am able to secure two stacked 12'6″ touring SUPs (each approx. 6″ thick) in the larger model Lockrack, while the smaller model is more suited to a single or double-stack of surfboards. The concept behind the design is simple: Lockrack traps a board or kayak between its opposing arms and pins the crafts against the base of the rack. Sliding the outboard arm in against the craft like a clamp produces a secure grip aided by the rubber coatings of the arms and base. Because of their curved design, the arms create both lateral and downward force to secure the board(s) in place.

The locking system has us most excited. Unlike straps that can be cut or come undone, Lockrack is made of forged and machined metal that once locked, creates the most secure roof transportation system available. The unit comes with four keys for locking and unlocking the ratcheting arms that secure the craft, a system we found to be incredibly easy and well, turnkey.

All Lockracks are made from corrosion-resistant, 100-percent virgin materials. These materials ensure a long life for the rack and withstand saltwater and elements encountered in the great outdoors. The rubber used at all four points of contact helps keep your watercraft safe from abrasions and damage that are common when using ratchet straps. The bases can be mounted to any crossbar. They come with T-bolt hardware for crossbars that have the capability and can otherwise be used with an adapter that attaches the base to any factory crossbar.

While it may not be the lightest weight or least bulky rack system on the market, and though it does require a small setup procedure to get it working right, the Lockrack is the best overall locking roof rack I've encountered. And while this is hardly a swan song to ratchet straps, I probably won't be using them anytime soon with my new Lockrack. It's good to have options.

SAN DIEGO, California — Carlsbad-based Surftech, a stand-up paddle (SUP) and Surfboard manufacturing company announces its collaboration with BLOOM, a materials development company, to develop deck pad traction on select 2018 models of paddle boards.

“Surftech is very conscious about making products with environmentally-friendly materials when we can, and we are proud to partner with BLOOM,” said Surftech's product director, Dan Watts. “Our waterways are our playgrounds, so we will do everything we can to keep them clean.”

While not yet biodegradable, BLOOM foams offer a significant step forward in the manufacture of flexible foams. A single Surftech paddle board using BLOOM foam returns 176 gallons of clean, filtered water to habitat and keeps approximately 123 balloons of CO2 (12” birthday balloon equivalent) from entering the atmosphere. “We’re excited about our collaboration with Surftech as they are an established market leader within the paddle board industry. We hope they will be a beacon for others in the industry to consider their environmental impact in all that they do,” said Rob Falken, BLOOM’s managing director.
